Science of the Blue Planet 13 December 2011

Introduction

The Oceans 2025 Science of the Blue Planet one day meeting will be held at the Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London on Tuesday 13 December 2011. The meeting will highlight the 'big picture' research and technology achievements, impacts and implications arising from NERC's Oceans 2025 programme. The final part of the meeting will be dedicated to the launch of the Marine Vision and Priorities currently being developed by the NERC-supported research community.

Meeting format

0945 - 1015 hrs: Tea/coffee, registration, set up posters

1015 - 1025 hrs: Welcome and introduction

1025 - 1530 hrs: Oceans 2025 presentations and discussions. Lunchtime posters.

1600 - 1700 hrs: Launch of Marine Vision and Priorities

1700 - 1800 hrs: Networking opportunity; posters

Registration

To apply to attend 'Science of the Blue Planet', please complete the registration form below. If number of applications exceeds available places, acceptance will be based on commitment to attend, date of registration, and balance of programme and stakeholder representation. A reserve list will be drawn and applicants notified accordingly. Note that speakers and poster-presenters also need to register.

2. Sessions and refreshments

A sandwich lunch and refreshments will be provided. Please tick the boxes below to indicate your requirements.

3. Expenses

There is no registration fee to attend the meeting and refreshments and lunch are provided. All other costs must be met by delegates, however, travel and subsistence support is available for one university representative per SOFI award (research grant or studentship). Please submit expense claims with receipts to Jackie Pearson at the ISPO address below, within one month of the end of the meeting:

4. Presentations

If you have been invited to give a presentation, please send the final title and an abstract not exceeding 200 words to Jackie Pearson, International and Strategic Partnerships Office (ISPO) by Monday 14 November. Abstracts will be included in a delegate guide which will be available at the meeting and published online.

Powerpoint presentations will be loaded in advance of 13 December to ensure smooth transition between speakers. Please email your presentation to Jackie Pearson no later than Monday 5 December. If sending your presentation from outside NOC, files exceeding 10 MB will need to be added to an ftp site. Please advise collection details to Jackie Pearson. If sending files within NOC, size may be up to 20 MB.

Presentations that use video clips/animations

We will make every effort to ensure that presentations that include video clips/animations will play, however, in case of problems on the day, please bring a lap-top on which you know your clips/animations will play.

The operating system on the lap-top provided will be Windows 7 Enterprise, MS Office 2007.

Time keeping will be adhered to strictly. During plenary, oral presentations will be 30 minutes in length (together with 5 minutes discussion). Presentations given during the parallel sessions will be 20 minutes in length (together with 5 minutes discussion).

5. Posters (by invitation to research group)


If you have been invited to display a poster, please send the title and an abstract not exceeding 200 words to Jackie Pearson, International and Strategic Partnerships Office (ISPO) by Monday 14 November. Abstracts will be included in a delegate guide which will be available at the meeting and published on line.

Please identify the Oceans 2025 theme (by name or number) or SOFI research grant/studentship award (by title).

Display boards and velcro will be available. Please use up to A0 size (84 x 119 cm) in portrait orientation. On arrival, please speak to Jackie Pearson who will arrange for your poster to be displayed at the start of the day.

If your poster title over-runs the length of the box, it will still reach the ISPO correctly provided total number of characters does not exceed 200.
